Update to my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from yesterday, with more pictures.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

They're definitely rail related, they have writing saying "Do not hump" (hehe) and "no running board".

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So, any other ideas now? Certainly rail related, but they don't have trucks or couplers (at least not attached). They certainly articulate up/down as you can see in the fourth picture. They do have hydraulic lines as well as an air line, but I don't see a brake wheel. I'm not sure what good the air line is without brakes, but maybe it's to run something else, or just to pass it through to other cars behind it? The hydraulic line labels are emergency operator return, emergency operator pressure, I.C.H. and I.C.I.

There are hatches on the tops, with ladders that go down in (one hatch has the cover removed) but there's nothing inside but hoses and lines and stuff. There are bulldozer tracks around, so they were pushed to where they lie.

if they are laying new tracks, could they be some sort of rail laying device, or part of the process. Maybe it stick off the end of the tracks and preps the ground in front for tracks, hence no rail wheels?

my theory:

this is part B of a two piece thing. The last picture shows the hooks used to like it with a crane. Also in the last picture, the spike is used to guide it into position onto part A which is what gets this thing around. at first I thought picture 1 and 5 showed paint scrapped off but I think they are rub marks. It looks to have 2 way symmetry, side to side and front to back which makes me think frame rails. I've seem road trailers used lift bridges for repairs and these kinda remind me of those but I dont think they are.

If you look at the other post, there's actually two of these things, and they definitely go together somehow, but they're identical to each other. My thought was some sort of temporary bridge/repair thing too, but I'm not sure.

"Do not hump" is related to what's called a classification yard. It's basically where they assemble trains to head out. A hump yard is a variant of a classification yard, where they use the ultra-high technology of gravity. A tug pushes a rail car down a single track, over a small hill, and gravity and switching puts it where it needs to go. If they don't want it banging around, or possibly getting crunched, then it gets the warning against humping.

You learn shit like this when you marry into a family of railroad fanatics.

do they go together as in they wouldn;t work independently or are there just two of the same thing

Sadly, just after making this discovery, Diesel "disappeared," never to be heard from again.

That I can't tell you, because I don't yet know what they do, so I don't know if one of them could do it alone, lol.

Looking at some of my pictures (I have larger versions, Kinja compressed them a lot) some of the hydraulic lines are broken and ripped away from where they should be, one of the air lines just ends suddenly like it's torn, and there's some dents and bends on it like it was in an accident.

There's also grease on that huge ball, which makes me think for sure that it's a hitch of some sort, for some sort of giant receiver.

Maybe a ballast tamper ? Either that or parts of a track renewal train . Do you know which line runs there?

I don't think so. Work trains seem to be exclusively yellow, and much more complicated looking mechanically. I think it's some sort of simple mechanical machine, for lifting, or supporting, or something, but I dunno.

Good idea. I was thinking of finding some train forum, but reddit is probably easiest. You'll then be able to link my reddit name to my Gawker media empire (all hail) (R)(tm) but that's ok.

Alright, mystery solved, thanks to reddit. They're parts of what's called a Schnabel car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schnabel_…

They carry big generators and turbines and transformers and stuff suspended in between, with a ton of trucks under each end of themselves. They connect to each other when empty. This is actually one of two Schnabel cars that are the largest in the world (this one is actually THE largest, slightly). 231 feet long and 400 tons empty. Both owned by Westinghouse.

There was some sort of failure and they toppled off their trucks (not really a derailment because the rail parts remained on the tracks). They were empty at the time.

http://southern.railfan.net/schnabel/cars/…

This one specifically was built to move parts of the new Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

Here it is in better days. 36 axles!! Can carry a touch over 2 million pounds.
